What is Songkran?

Songkran is Thailand’s most famous festival. This important event in the Buddhist calendar marks the beginning of the traditional Thai New Year. The name Songkran comes from a Sanskrit word meaning 'passing' or 'approaching'. If you're on your way to this spectacle of a holiday, hope you booked a nice Phuket hotel that suits your water war party.

Songkran is celebrated throughout Thailand between the 13th and 15th of April, but in places like Chiang mai or Pattaya celebrations continue for even more days! The celebrations are extended until the 19th of April and this extension is traditionally called “Wan Lai festival", which literally means “the day that flows”. This year in Phuket, once again it clashes with Phuket Bike Week 2015 but it's safe as the bikers normally do not ride on that day due to the danger. They later move to Phuket town for the latter part of the week after the Songkran Festival on 13th April.
