Phuket vegetarian festival history.

Phuket’s Vegetarian festival began in 1825, when the governor of Thalang, Praya Jerm, moved the island’s principal town from Ta Reua in Thalang District to Get-Hoe in Kathu District where Chinese miners were. Kathu was then still covered by jungle and fever was rife. It happened that a traveling opera company (called ngiu in Thai or pua-hee in Hokkien dialect) came from China to perform for the miners. When the whole company grew sick, they kept to a vegetarian diet to honor two of the emperor gods, Kiew Ong Tai Teh and Yok Ong Sone Teh. The sickness afflicting the opera troupe. This greatly interested the people of Kathu, who asked how it was done. The answer came that ritual vegetarianism with its attendant ceremonies had been the cause, with the result that people embraced the faith enthusiastically. Thus the festival began.

This is the most spectacular event of the Vegetarian Festival or the Nine Emperor Gods Festival., which became iconic of the festival as a whole. The processions offer an opportunity for the householders and the general public along the streets to receive the blessings of the gods possessing the spirit mediums. The inhabitants set up altar in front of their houses, decorated with Chinese embroideries table apron (Tok Ui), placing on them lit candles and incense sticks , flowers, fruit, sweets and tea. The processions will be almost everyday from different shrines around the area. It may be unsuitable for children as there is a lot of weapons skewered through the faces of participants which may look terrifying. Other than that, the annual vegetarian festival Phuket is one for the memory books

Shutdown Phuket Begins

Picture

In the last several weeks of protest against the Thai Government, it has now come to this new strategy of a shutdown in Bangkok and it seems elsewhere in Thailand is following. The existing Government has already announced elections in the next coming months but it seems that the protestors are not letting people forget their plight.

Bangkok has been in turmoil and it has not helped tourism, the Thai baht, the economy, their daily lives but it looks like that's what the struggle has been about in many ways or at least many of these things. Not forgetting allegations of corruption withing the Government. Now, as with many other locations throughtout Thailand, Phuket is also part of the whole agenda. In support of their comrades in Bangkok, many people have taken to the streets to rally their descent on the country's politics and those running it especially Prime Minister
Yingluck Shinawatra who refuses to step down.

In Phuket they have started a major rally in Phuket Town. Government buildings and offices were closed, with police and the military on standby. Many schools also closed and at least 3 were lead by student leaders that participated on stage in the rally protest, boosting the influx of younger people who will ultimately become the next generation of voters. It is not clear if the protestors will move to other parts of the island like Patong and Bangtao or even do a sit in at the Phuket International Airport.

Tourist have been warned to stay away and not provoke things in any way. Many embassies have also instructed their visitors to be cautious and even advised them to not wear the red or yellow colors as a precaution against any misunderstanding that may erupt from either side in any mistaken support.

Phuket police have siad the situation is clam. Even though the protest is loud, it is well organized and the police chief has mentioned that he knows the main persons and have spoken to them to ensure that they keep withing the legally allowed protest rules defined in Thailand's constitution. Public safety to locals and tourist on the island is priority to the police. On the protestors side, they have mentioned that everything they do depends on what happens in Bankok. So now, it's a wait and see game, even for the tourist.

Phuket Old Town Festival

The three day Phuket old town festival kicked off on 15th Feb 2013. The yearly affair really highlights the Chinese culture there which is the thriving community in the old town area. There will be plenty of food, dance performances and artwork as well. The parade will start off on Phang-Hga road, near the Honda showroom, and end at Dragon Park on Thalang road. Most of the roads for the parade and other side roads will all be converted to walking streets so as to accommodate the huge crowds of people at the festival.

There are three main objectives of this years festival. The development  and conservation of the culture, to promote the old town area, and to encourage residents to promote Phuket Old Town.

In addition to the street acts and performances, the four main streets used will have themes attached to them. Thalang road will about the past, Krabi road will be about the present, Phang-Nga road will be about the future and Dibuk road will showcase items like food, handicraft and clothes by the Peranakan Association.

On the last day there will be worship and prayers by devotees at the Hai Leng Ong open space near the Dragon Park. So if you're there and would like to view a different side of Phuket and its traditions, now is the time to do so and head over to Phuket old town to catch all the action of the festival.

Phuket New Year 2012

alt=
Phuket New Year 2012 has been plagued with problems which is dragging out till the last minutes of the end of the year. Literally.

This year it's had a fair share of issues like the Sydictive party shifting from Surin beach, announced by Paris Hilton months ago, to Patong beach. The issue about tickets sold, ban on alcohol at the venue by the Patong municipality, enforcing the rule that the party to be free as the law states that anything done on the free beach and must be so. Also, Akon confirming he wouldn't be appearing after not being paid according to the contract and his name being used for promotions and social media even before confirmation or payments done. Not forgetting the giant floating platform having plenty of technical issues on the sound, lights and display monitors all in tow. Plus the two VIP platforms hadn't even arrived but is said to be on it's way due to the tide not being suitable for moving them.

Plus, the yearly Patong beach party organizers upset that their party will be marginalized by patrons. However, they have no alcohol ban placed unlike the Syndictive party, so it becomes their advantage. Not forgetting the Bangla road party hype will be in full swing right in front of the beach party zone as they have been decorating the streets and most of the bars and clubs are ready for a good countdown. Even further down the beach area is another beach party zone towards the road leading to Kata.

Lastly, the weather has been bad with heavy downpours all over Phuket. Organizers are hoping it will clear so everyone can have a good time but the Thai Meteorological Department has indicated heavy downpour till Wednesday.

Meanwhile in Phuket City, “Colorful Countdown Phuket” for 2013 kicks off with a 3 day event from 29th till 31st December held at the Chai field. Phuket Governor Maitri Inthusut opened the event with birds being set free for the new year arrival.

Artist to appear at the event will include duo girl band Neko Jump plus others like rock singer Bao Wee, Thai folk band Sexy Girl, Wit Hyper, Samkong Super Dance troupe, rock band Am Fine and lots more.

Plus there will be singing contest, food galore, game booths and not forgetting beer bars set up so you don't go thirsty while having a good time. So the Phuket nightlife seems all ready for rolling in 2013 with a bang.

Phuket On The Cheaper Side

alt=

If you looking at doing Phuket on the cheaper side of things, its a good way to go local. by this it simply means taking a public bus from one place to another. A trip from Phuket town to Patong beach area cost in the region of one dollar unlike taking a private taxi which could cost around 500 baht, equivalent to about eighteen to twenty dollars, depending on which country you're from. Still, the difference is great.

Most backpacker probably does this already but for others, especially first timer visitors to Phuket, the cost of transport from place to place eventually adds up. So public transport saves you a ton for other things.
alt=

Finding restaurants and cafes is quite easy and for anyone from the western world. You'll probably be able to find your country's food in most places in Phuket. The essence of Indian, Lebanese and other middle eastern countries is up and coming in the Phuket scene as well. A rise in quick rise in fast food style kebab wraps stall are also popping up everywhere.

The fact is, little roadside stalls, motor bike stalls or push carts stalls can be found on many street sides or corners selling food like banana crepes, sausages or meats on a stick to noodles in hot soups. These little treats are cheap and fills you up as well.
alt=thai smiling waitress

Above all else, the service comes with a Thai smile that's friendly and with gratitude. One can't help but want that in your own country. It's a cultural thing and the people do it in a gracious manner.

Phuket, just like every where else in Thailand, is bombarded by vistors each year and things get more expensive, however there's always room for a lower budget and a good time if you just look for it.

Phuket Town Walkabout

alt=
Taking a little walkabout in Phuket town through day and night and you'll find it goes from a very busy town like everywhere else but what you find is you are in a sort of time warp back to the seventies in many places and totally modernized in many.

If you intend to visit Phuket town, there are many small guesthouses for the budget conscious and many modern ones to select from. One piece of advice, unlike Patong area, these hotels may not have a safe in the room but a safe box at the reception for use. Just in case you are  afraid of loosing your passport and money as you never know what could happen.

The best thing about the "old town" area of Phuket town itself is finding many shops selling things like watches, laundry shops, Chinese fortune ornaments, clothes, etc, and there are many nice quaint cafes, modernized with wi-fi, that you can sit by and have a meal or watch the world go by.

alt=
You'll also find Phuket town nightlife is spread in many different locations and the local patronage is very high, although foreigners go to other bars and pubs, they are always welcomed. From rock, pop, blues, jazz to Thai cultural indie pop, Phuket town is alive and kicking with its music scene and it seems the residents there can get enough of it. With new places opening up, modern malls arising and changes in modern generations of Thais lifestyle; the emergence of some lively nightlife hotspots is evident in Phuket town.
