November 5th 2015 will be the 88th birthday of Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej. He is worlds longest reigning monarch and is well respected by his subjects.
Phuket, and throughout Thailand, will be enjoying a long weekend because by law if a holiday falls on a weekend, Monday will also be an added holiday. There is also no alocohol ban been imposed by officials in various sectors of Thailand, including Phuket, and no Government notice. So celebrations and festivities looks set to be grand. However, there is looming threat recently of IS activities emerging from the south and Malaysia is on high alert. The Thai police is on high alert, especially with the King's birthday with a symbolic good luck number of 88 and do not want any incident to occur. Last year King Bhumibol Adulyadej did not make a appearance or deliver a speech due to health reasons. It is not know as yet, and no official Government information, if there will be an appearance by his majesty. Thailand is still does not have any ruling Prime Minister as the Thai army had seized control after wide spread power manipulation and corruption. The Thai people are all ready for street celebrations, grand parties and a good weekend in spite of it all. Also, it is the high season after all.

The existing Government has already announced elections in the next coming months but it seems that the protestors are not letting people forget their plight. Bangkok has been in turmoil and it has not helped tourism, the Thai baht, the economy, their daily lives but it looks like that's what the struggle has been about in many ways or at least many of these things. Not forgetting allegations of corruption withing the Government. Now, as with many other locations throughtout Thailand, Phuket is also part of the whole agenda. In support of their comrades in Bangkok, many people have taken to the streets to rally their descent on the country's politics and those running it especially Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra who refuses to step down. In Phuket they have started a major rally in Phuket Town. Government buildings and offices were closed, with police and the military on standby. Many schools also closed and at least 3 were lead by student leaders that participated on stage in the rally protest, boosting the influx of younger people who will ultimately become the next generation of voters. It is not clear if the protestors will move to other parts of the island like Patong and Bangtao or even do a sit in at the Phuket International Airport. Tourist have been warned to stay away and not provoke things in any way. Many embassies have also instructed their visitors to be cautious and even advised them to not wear the red or yellow colors as a precaution against any misunderstanding that may erupt from either side in any mistaken support. Phuket police have siad the situation is clam. Even though the protest is loud, it is well organized and the police chief has mentioned that he knows the main persons and have spoken to them to ensure that they keep withing the legally allowed protest rules defined in Thailand's constitution. Public safety to locals and tourist on the island is priority to the police. On the protestors side, they have mentioned that everything they do depends on what happens in Bankok. So now, it's a wait and see game, even for the tourist. 21/11/2012 2 Comments Loy Krathong DayLoy Krathong Festival So it looks like the Phuket scene is gearing up for Loy Krathong day this 28th November 2012. Loy Krathong is celebrated not only in Phuket but all over Thailand. So what is the meaning of the Loy Krathong festival. It is said that the festival had it's origins in Sukhothai, north of Bangkok, approximately 800 years ago. It falls on the twelve month of the Thai calender which, in a normal calender, is November. The krathongs are made up of the cellulose trunk of banana trees. Making them is usually a family affair. These "boats", as they are nicknamed, are usually well decorated like a parade float and the person using it will have the intention of clearing away all bad luck and misfortune. The well decorated krathong is usually made of colorful flowers and banana leaves with room for candles and incense sticks. People usually place a few coins, nail clippings and some of their hair to represent them before launching it into the rivers, streams or oceans while making prayers as they watch it float away. This act represents bad luck being taken away and new beginnings coming in. Coincidentally, the rice planting season begins after the fall festival and will later lead to the harvest being in mid April and that's when they have the water festival Songkran. Many young couples tend to place special items in their krathong to have a successful marriage and better futures or even kids. As years have gone by the Thai people have become more creative in their efforts to gain better things in life. Tourist are more than happy to partake in the festival as it is such a unique sight to see all the rivers, canals and oceans of lit candle krathongs moving along. It's just a spectacle in itself and not to be missed if you are there on that November full moon in Thailand. It makes for a great reason to have a holiday. So what is the Loy Krathong process like? Well, just before sunset people go to the beaches, rivers, etc and light their candles and incense after placing their items inside then as the sun almost sets and the full moon visible, they release their krathong. Tradition says, if it floats away from you then good luck is to follow for the new year ahead but if it floats back then things are not going to be as rosy or the year ahead is not as fortunate. Usually in many places all over Thailand, the festival incorporates a beauty queen contest, after the release of the krathongs. This goes back to the legend of of Noppamas who is said to have created the first krathong. She is supposedly the consort of the Sukhothai king. Coincidentally, and mostly in the northern area of Thailand, the festival of Yi Peng is also celebrated in the same full moon period. There is a massive display of lighted lanterns that fill the skies at night. These are massive balloon like laterns know as Khom lai or Khom fai and are made primarily of thin paper. The same belief of sending bad luck off and getting better luck for the future is in line with the method of the floating krathongs. Only these go up into the sky. So with lighted floats in the ocean, rivers, lakes, etc, and massive balloons lighting the skies of Thailand; your luck could just change for the better. Only way to find out is to be there for Loy Krathong. |
