The traffic in Thailand is not like in the west, even though you need to have a driver's license to drive a car or bike here, you should know that the actual driving test is not done in the traffic, hence in Thailand you actually learn to drive after you get your drivers license. This of course results in plenty of accidents. Regarding speed limits there are signs showing them in many places but they are rarely enforced. Thailand got left side traffic, but don't be surprised to see people driving against the traffic, it's quite normal here.

Renting a motorbike and exploring the beaches on your own is a great experience, but please do not rent a motorbike unless you are an experienced driver. Besides if you can't show a valid driver's license when stopped by the police, you will get a fine, and it happends quite often.

Renting motorbike:

The motorbikes for rent in Phuket range from 90cc Scooters up to the heavy 900cc Racing bikes. The prices for renting varies a lot with high season and low season. For a normal automatic 125cc scooter the average price is around 250-350 baht per day. If you want to rent for a longer period the price can be negotiated. The bikes are uninsured in most cases, hence you have to pay for it if you break it or lose it. Remember that if you don't have a motorbike license, your insurance company will most likely not cover any accidents that may occur.

When renting a motorbike in Phuket you are often required to leave your passport asĀ  insurance.

Renting a car:

A far better option to renting a bike, although a bit more costly. You need to have a valid international drivers license from your home country. You can rent anything from a Jeep to CRV's. Expect to pay around 1000baht a day for a jeep, and up to 2500baht~ for a CRV.
